Catholic Church Opens More Low-Income Housing Units

Catholic Homes New York held the official opening of St. Augustine Terrace, a new low-income housing development that will provide 112 affordable housing units for families in the Bronx.

The opening ceremony for the building was presided over by Archbishop Timothy Dolan and the first lady of New York, Chirlane McCray.

St. Augustine Terrace is the first of 2,000 new low-income units the Catholic Charities and the Archdiocese of New York plans on building over the next 10 years.

All of the new Catholic Charity buildings will be constructed on land owned by the church.

Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, head of Catholic Charities in New York told the New York Daily News, "Today, the Catholic Church of New York City is taking the lead in ensuring that low-income New Yorkers have access to well-built, well-maintained housing, along with the services to help those with the greatest needs."

Currently, the Catholic Charities of New York oversees 2,336 affordable housing units; a number they hope will grow to over 4,000 by 2029.
